The wych elm is widespread in Europe and typically reaches a height of 20-30 m and a trunk diameter of 0.6-1.2 m. When young, the bark is smooth, later becoming brown and cracked; the wood is a light to medium reddish-brown. With a density of approximately 605 kg/m³, elm wood is flexible and very tough, but its interlocked grain requires careful handling, as it is prone to tear-out.
