The common hazel is widespread in Europe and Western Asia and typically forms multi-stemmed trees 3-8 m tall with individual trunk diameters of 0.05-0.15(0.2) m. Its bark remains smooth for a long time and later only becomes slightly cracked, ranging in color from brown to grayish-brown; the wood is light brownish and quite uniform. With a density of approximately 520 kg/m³, it is surprisingly tough and flexible as pole timber and is well-suited for stakes and small projects, even though its lumber is hardly standardized.

Hazelwood is sensitive and often reacts to moods faster than words can capture them. It is one of the woods that almost immediately reflects the emotional state of its wearer. This closeness makes it particularly sensitive, but also demanding to work with. Hazel requires not only skill, but above all, inner clarity. It works best with people who know and can manage their feelings, rather than being surprised by them. Those who don't understand themselves or are overwhelmed by strong emotions will quickly reach their limits with hazel. It absorbs emotional states and reflects them back amplified – not arbitrarily, but as a direct resonance. Its nature is particularly evident in its close connection to, and pronounced affinity for, healing magic and the difficulty of reliably wielding it.
