Kelpies are shapeshifting aquatic creatures that live in lakes and rivers. They often appear as horses but can change their form to lure humans. Their behavior is deceptive: they initially appear calm or harmless but reveal themselves to be dangerous as soon as someone gets close. Kelpies are closely tied to their bodies of water and exhibit a high degree of adaptability to their environment. They react quickly to changes and exploit them strategically. A kelpie's hair carries these qualities. The magic it contains is flexible and adaptable, but can also be difficult to predict. It is suitable for applications requiring quick reactions and situational action, but demands attention and control to prevent it from drifting in undesirable directions.

Kelpie hair behaves at its core as one would expect from its origins: adaptable, quick-reacting, and difficult to pin down. The magic adjusts to situations, often even during its execution, making it particularly effective in transfiguration and charms. It demonstrates a clear strength in these areas because it not only implements changes but actively participates in them. However, this flexibility comes at the expense of stability. Results are rarely consistently reproducible, even with identical casting, and small deviations can quickly amplify. In duels or healing applications, its performance remains average due to the magic's lack of clear focus. It can do many things, but nothing reliably consistently. Kelpie hair is demanding to handle, less because of its resistance than because of its inconsistency. Its low loyalty means that no firm bond can be established that one can rely on permanently. At the same time, its temperament is high—not chaotic, but constantly in flux. The material is sensitive to changes in the caster and the environment and tends to absorb them immediately. Nonverbal magic and general applications remain possible, but require consistently precise control, as there is little balance. Overall, the core of the system is geared towards reaction, not consistency: it rewards attentiveness and adaptability, but does not provide a stable foundation upon which one can readily rely.
