The cultivated pear is widespread in Europe and Western Asia and is grown worldwide; it remains rather small, reaching a height of 6–15 m and a trunk diameter of 0.15–0.30 m. Its bark is finely fissured and greyish-brown, the wood pinkish to reddish-brown and unusually uniform. At approximately 690 kg/m³, it is rather stiff, hard, and very fine-textured, making it ideally suited for precise carving and turning.
