Description
Pink ivory, also known as red ivory wood, comes from *Berchemia zeyheri* or *Phyllogeiton zeyheri*, a tree native to southern Africa. It typically grows as a small to medium-sized tree, reaching heights of around 15 meters. The bark is gray to brownish-gray and rather inconspicuous, while the wood is distinguished by its pink to deep reddish-pink tones. With a density of approximately 990–1100 kg/m³, it is exceptionally dense, very hard, and has a fine and uniform grain. It can be worked smoothly, but requires sharp tools and careful handling. Due to its limited availability, slow growth, and highly selective harvesting, it is a rare material used for small, high-quality pieces.
Pink ivory possesses a quiet austerity. Its striking color initially appears soft and almost friendly, but the wood itself is considerably more controlled. It is dense, fine-pored, and closed, with a surface that can be worked very smoothly and shows hardly any irregularity in the grain.
Working with it requires patience and sharp tools. Clean cuts remain precise, and fine transitions appear clear and lasting. This very closedness also defines its magical nature. Pink ivory scatters little, dampens little, and leaves little room for casual corrections.
Only a small percentage of all trees are even suitable for magic work. Even within suitable species, it is rare to find a specimen that possesses the necessary magical affinity in sufficient quality. Pink ivory is among the woods for which this selection is particularly rigorous. Wands made from this material are correspondingly rare, even though the wood itself is well-known.
Its strength lies primarily in its high stability, pronounced transfiguration, and very demanding handling. Transfiguration spells benefit from the clear structure of this wood because form, intention, and execution remain closely aligned. Where other woods compensate for slight uncertainties, Pink Ivory immediately reflects them back.
This doesn't make it unpredictable, but rather austere. Its temperament remains low, yet its demands are high. Those who work calmly, precisely, and consistently will obtain a wand of great clarity. Those who handle it impulsively or make corrections during a spell will quickly realize that this wood is unforgiving.
Pink Ivory is less naturally suited to healing magic or very soft spellcasting. It lacks the necessary flexibility to resonate gently. In controlled, structured applications, however, it unfolds its true qualities.
With the right binding, a wand of rare precision is created. Pink Ivory impresses not with wildness, but with discipline – a wood that hides no flaws and is therefore extraordinarily effective in safe hands.
