Description
The black poplar used here is widespread in Europe, Western Asia, and North Africa, reaching heights of 20–30 m with a trunk diameter of 1.0–1.5 m. With age, the bark becomes deeply furrowed and turns gray to dark gray, while the wood remains very light to light brown. At only about 385 kg/m³, it is soft, noticeably pliable, and not very strong. Although easy to work, it tends to develop a woolly surface when planed and warps during drying.
Poplar is reliable. Not spectacular, not eccentric, but honest in a way that is calming in everyday life as well as in times of crisis. This wood doesn't push itself to the forefront, yet it remains consistently present and responds reliably to clear leadership and stable intentions. It harmonizes particularly well with people who possess a clear moral compass and value consistency more than drama. Poplar doesn't seek fickle personalities, but rather those who take responsibility for decisions and don't interpret it situationally. This compatibility forms the basis for a stable and long-term bond. Its nature is primarily manifested in pronounced loyalty, consistent power, and remarkable inner stability. Once it has formed a bond, it remains constant and reliable. Its magic rarely produces extreme fluctuations, but rather works evenly, cleanly, and with resilience over a long period. This stability is its true strength. Spells work reliably, without unpredictable swings, and retain their quality even with repeated use. Especially in situations where reliability is more important than spectacular effect, the value of this wood becomes clear.
Poplar requires no extraordinary technique, but a clear stance. Indecisiveness or moral ambiguity quickly leads to friction and diminishes the quality of the magic. In steady hands, however, a calm, stable connection develops that is rarely shaken.
With the right binding, poplar becomes an exceptionally reliable companion. It impresses not with excesses, but with constancy – a wand that doesn't surprise, but sustains, and whose strength is particularly evident when everything else becomes uncertain.
